Maritime Compliance — STCW, ENG1 Medical & TWIC Card Tracking
STCW certificates expire every 5 years, ENG1 medicals are annual, and TWIC cards lapse every 5 years. A single expired STCW grounds a crew member in port. Certivenza tracks every seafarer's compliance.

Maritime compliance involves some of the longest certification chains of any industry — STCW alone has multiple modules each with independent expiry dates. The MCA's ENG1 medical requirement means seafarers with short-notice health changes can lose seagoing eligibility overnight. TWIC cards for US port access expire every 5 years with no employer notification. Certivenza tracks every certificate across every crew member so no ship sails with a non-compliant crew.
Every 5yr

Annual
MCA ENG1 medical certificate (over 40)
Every 5yr

The compliance challenges ports, shipping & maritime businesses face
Without a dedicated system, lapsed certifications and missed renewals put your business at risk.
STCW modules expire at different times for the same seafarer
A single seafarer can hold 6+ STCW certificates — basic safety, GMDSS, tanker endorsements, MARPOL training — each with different issue dates and 5-year renewal cycles. Managing this manually per crew member is a full-time job.
ENG1 medical frequency increases with age and medical conditions
Seafarers under 40 renew their ENG1 every 2 years; over 40, annually. Seafarers with declared medical conditions may face 6-month renewals. Without a system, the employer often isn't aware of the shortened cycle until the medical lapses.
TWIC card applications take 7–10 weeks — leaving a port access gap
TSA TWIC card renewals take 7–10 weeks to process. Seafarers who apply late face a gap in US port access that can ground them during a loaded voyage with US port calls.
Right to Work for international crew requires flag-state and port-state coordination
Mixed-nationality crews require flag-state endorsements, STCW CoC equivalence recognitions, and host-country Right to Work checks. Without a tracking system, non-compliant crew members are only identified at port-state control inspections.

Frequently asked questions
Can Certivenza track multiple STCW modules for the same seafarer?
Yes. Create a separate document type for each STCW module — Basic Safety, GMDSS, Firefighting Advanced, etc. Assign each module to the seafarers who hold it. Each module's expiry is tracked independently and alerts fire on their individual dates.
How do we handle ENG1 medicals with different renewal frequencies per seafarer?
When you upload an ENG1 medical certificate, set the expiry to the actual date on the MCA certificate — whether that's 12 or 24 months. Certivenza uses the real expiry, not a standard period, so shortened cycles are tracked automatically.
Can we alert seafarers to apply for TWIC renewal 10 weeks before expiry?
Yes. Set a custom early alert at 70 days (10 weeks) for the TWIC card document type. The seafarer receives the alert directly and has time to submit the TSA TWIC renewal application before the current card expires.
We crew from multiple nationalities — can Certivenza track flag-state CoC endorsements?
Yes. Create document types for flag-state endorsements per nationality. For example, 'MCA STCW CoC — Filipino Seafarer' as a distinct type from 'USCG CoC'. Assign the relevant endorsements to each crew member based on their nationality and certification.
